Upanaha is an Ayurvedic poultice therapy where a medicated herbal paste is applied over the affected joints or muscles, covered with leaves or cloth, and left for a specific duration. This therapy is particularly effective in reducing pain, swelling, stiffness, and inflammation in conditions like arthritis, joint degeneration, and musculoskeletal disorders.
Upanaha is highly beneficial for Vata and Kapha disorders, where coldness, stiffness, and swelling are prominent. The warmth and medicinal properties of the herbs help in pain relief, improving circulation, and restoring mobility.
The affected joint or area is gently massaged with warm medicated oil to prepare the tissues.
The medicated herbal paste is freshly prepared by mixing powdered herbs with warm decoctions, oils, or ghee.
The warm herbal paste is applied in a thick layer over the affected joint.
The area is then covered with herbal leaves or a cotton cloth to retain warmth.
A bandage or soft cloth is tied around the area to keep the poultice in place.
The poultice is left for several hours (3–6 hours) or overnight, depending on the condition.
In some cases, mild heat (Swedana) is applied over the poultice to enhance absorption.
The poultice is gently removed, and the area is cleansed with warm herbal water.
A mild oil application and light massage are done to enhance relaxation.
The patient is advised to avoid cold exposure and heavy exertion after the therapy.
Upanaha is a powerful Ayurvedic external therapy for joint pain, arthritis, and musculoskeletal disorders. It provides long-lasting pain relief, reduces inflammation, and improves joint function naturally.
