Pizhichil Therapy

Njavarakizhi Therapy

Pizhichil, also known as Sarvangadhara (whole-body oil bath therapy), is a deeply rejuvenating and relaxing Ayurvedic treatment where warm medicated oil is poured over the body in a rhythmic manner. This therapy combines Snehana (oleation) and Swedana (sudation), making it highly effective for neuromuscular disorders, arthritis, and overall rejuvenation.

Pizhichil is beneficial for:
Paralysis and stroke recovery
Arthritis and joint disorders
Muscle weakness and degenerative condition
Chronic stress and fatigue
Nervous system disorders

This therapy primarily pacifies Vata dosha, reducing dryness, stiffness, and nerve-related disorders while promoting relaxation and rejuvenation.

Procedure of Pizhichil Therapy

  • Purva Karma (Pre-Treatment Preparation)

The patient is made to lie down on the Droni (therapy table) in a comfortable position. The selected medicated oil is warmed to a soothing temperature. Two to four trained therapists are assigned to ensure synchronized oil pouring and massaging.

  • Pradhana Karma (Main Procedure)

The warm oil is squeezed from a cotton cloth in a continuous stream over the entire body. Gentle, rhythmic massage strokes are performed to enhance absorption. The therapy is done in seven positions, ensuring uniform application. The session lasts for 45–60 minutes, and the oil is reheated periodically.

  • Paschat Karma (Post-Treatment Care)

Excess oil is gently wiped off with a soft towel. The patient is allowed to rest for 30 minutes to allow deeper absorption. A warm water bath or herbal steam therapy is given if required. Light food and herbal supplements may be advised for better digestion.
