Shirodhara is a deeply relaxing Ayurvedic therapy where a continuous stream of warm medicated oil, buttermilk, or herbal decoction is poured over the forehead (Ajna Marma – third eye region). This therapy is highly effective for mental relaxation, stress relief, and nervous system rejuvenation. The rhythmic flow induces a meditative state, making it one of the most powerful treatments for anxiety, insomnia, migraines, and neurological disorders.
Shirodhara primarily balances Vata and Pitta doshas, calming the mind, cooling the nervous system, and restoring emotional equilibrium.
The patient lies on a comfortable wooden therapy table (Droni) in a supine position. A gentle head, neck, and shoulder massage is done with warm oil. The eyes are covered with a soft cotton pad to prevent oil entry.
The Shirodhara vessel is positioned 4–6 inches above the forehead. Warm medicated oil is poured in a rhythmic stream over the forehead, focusing on the Ajna Marma (third eye region). The oil flows continuously for 30–45 minutes, promoting deep relaxation. The therapist gently massages the scalp and temples during the process. The session may be repeated for 7, 14, or 21 days, depending on the condition.
The oil is wiped off, and the patient is allowed to rest for 15–30 minutes. The head is washed after a few hours using a mild herbal shampoo. A light Sattvic diet and warm herbal teas are recommended post-therapy.
Shirodhara is a powerful Ayurvedic therapy that profoundly calms the mind, balances emotions, and rejuvenates the nervous system. It is one of the most effective treatments for stress-related disorders, sleep disturbances, and neurological conditions.
