Thalapothichil is a specialized Ayurvedic therapy where a medicated herbal paste is applied over the entire scalp, covering the head like a thick layer or cap. This therapy is particularly effective in balancing Pitta dosha, making it highly beneficial for conditions like stress, migraines, insomnia, hair fall, and mental fatigue.
The name Thalapothichil means “covering the head with a medicinal layer.” The paste has a cooling effect, which helps soothe the mind, improve concentration, and nourish the scalp.
TThe patient is seated comfortably in a calm environment. A gentle head and neck massage with medicated oil is performed to relax the scalp
The medicated herbal paste is freshly prepared by mixing powdered herbs with oils and a suitable liquid (buttermilk, milk, or herbal decoction).
The paste is applied evenly over the entire scalp, forming a thick layer covering the head.
The crown of the head (Brahmarandhra – vital energy point) is left uncovered or a small hole is made to regulate heat.
A banana leaf or cotton cloth is placed over the paste to retain moisture and enhance absorption.
The patient rests for 30–45 minutes in a relaxed state.
The paste is gently removed and the head is washed with lukewarm herbal water. The patient is advised to avoid cold exposure and mental strain post-treatment. A light Pitta-pacifying diet (cooling foods) is recommended.
Thalapothichil is a highly effective cooling therapy that soothes the nervous system, enhances brain function, and nourishes the scalp. It is a perfect Pitta-pacifying therapy, offering significant relief for stress, migraines, insomnia, and hair problems.
