Karnadhoopam Therapy

Karnadhoopam Therapy

Karnadhoopam is an Ayurvedic therapy that involves the fumigation (Dhupanam) of the ears (Karna) with medicated herbal smoke. This procedure is primarily used for ear infections, tinnitus, hearing loss, and excess wax accumulation. The warm medicated smoke helps in disinfecting the ear canal, clearing blockages, and pacifying aggravated Vata and Kapha Dosha.

The ears are considered the primary site of Vata Dosha, and any imbalance can lead to dryness, tinnitus, hearing difficulties, and pain. Karnadhoopam provides moisturization, enhances circulation, and protects against infections.

Procedure

  • Purva Karma (Pre-Treatment Preparation)

The patient is seated comfortably in a warm, draft-free environment. The ears are gently cleaned with a cotton swab and medicated oil like Anu Taila or Bilva Taila is applied for lubrication. Medicated herbs and resins are placed in the Dhupa Yantra (fumigation device) and ignited to produce controlled smoke.

  • Pradhana Karma (Main Procedure)

The warm herbal smoke is directed into the ear canal using a hollow pipe or ear cone. The smoke is inhaled gently through the ear, allowing it to penetrate deep into the canal. The process is repeated for 3–5 minutes per ear, ensuring proper fumigation. The procedure is conducted daily or on alternate days for 7–14 days, depending on the condition.

  • Paschat Karma (Post-Treatment Care)

The ears are wiped clean, and a few drops of warm medicated oil (Karna Taila) are instilled to prevent dryness. The patient is advised to avoid cold air, excessive noise, or exposure to water for a few hours. A light diet and warm herbal drinks may be recommended to balance Vata Dosha.
