Lepam Therapy

lepam Therapy

Lepam (लेपं) is an external Ayurvedic therapy that involves the application of medicated herbal paste over the affected body parts to treat pain, inflammation, skin disorders, and muscular conditions. The herbal paste, prepared using fresh medicinal plants, powders, or decoctions, is applied in a thick layer to allow absorption through the skin.
Lepam is highly effective in balancing Vata and Pitta Dosha, making it beneficial for joint pain, swelling, skin diseases, and muscle stiffness. It is also used for cosmetic and rejuvenation purposes, improving skin texture, complexion, and overall health.

This therapy is particularly beneficial in:

Arthritis (Sandhigata Vata, Aamavata)

Muscle pain and stiffness (Mamsagata Vata, Snayu Vikara)

Psoriasis and eczema (Kitibha, Vicharchika)

Pigmentation and dark spots (Vyanga, Neelika)

Burns and wounds (Vrana Ropana, Agnidagdha Chikitsa)

Procedure of Lepam Therapy

  • Purva Karma (Pre-Treatment Preparation)

The patient is made to sit or lie comfortably. A gentle oil massage (Abhyanga) is sometimes done before Lepam for better absorption. The appropriate herbal ingredients are selected and made into a smooth paste using water, milk, or oil.

  • Pradhana Karma (Main Procedure)

The herbal paste is applied evenly over the affected area. The paste is left to dry naturally, allowing the medicinal properties to penetrate. Depending on the condition, it is kept for 20–45 minutes.

  • Paschat Karma (Post-Treatment Care)

The paste is washed off gently with warm water or herbal decoctions. A soothing herbal oil or moisturizer may be applied to nourish the skin. The patient is advised to avoid sun exposure and harsh soaps for a few hours.
