Ksheeradhoomam Therapy

Ksheeradhoomam Therapy

Ksheeradhoomam (क्षीरधूमं) is a specialized Ayurvedic therapy that involves the application of medicated milk steam to the face, head, and neck region. It is a unique type of Swedana (sudation therapy) that is particularly beneficial for neurological disorders, speech difficulties, facial paralysis, sinusitis, and respiratory conditions.
This therapy combines the nourishing and soothing properties of milk (Ksheera) with the therapeutic effects of medicinal herbs, which are boiled together to produce a medicated steam (Dhooma). The patient inhales this steam, which helps lubricate, strengthen, and rejuvenate the nerves, respiratory tract, and sensory organs.

Ksheeradhoomam is particularly useful in conditions like:

Facial paralysis (Ardita Vata)

Speech disorders (Mookata, Vataja Vaksanga)

Sinusitis (Peenasam)

Respiratory issues like asthma and chronic cough (Shwasa & Kasa)

Headache and migraines (Shirah Shoola)

Dryness and stiffness in the face and throat (Mukha Shosha, Kantha Shosha)

Procedure

  • Purva Karma (Pre-Treatment Preparation)

The patient is made to sit in a comfortable position. A mild oil massage (Mukha Abhyanga) with Ksheerabala Taila or Anu Taila is performed on the face and neck. The medicated milk decoction is prepared by boiling milk with the selected herbs. The steam-generating apparatus (Ksheeradhoomam Yantra) is set up, ensuring the steam is at an optimal temperature.

  • Pradhana Karma (Main Procedure)

The medicated steam is directed toward the patient’s face, nose, mouth, and throat using a tube or nozzle. The patient is asked to inhale deeply to allow the medicinal properties to reach the respiratory and nervous systems. Care is taken to avoid excessive heat exposure, and breaks are given if needed. The therapy is continued for 10–15 minutes or until the desired therapeutic effects are achieved.

  • Paschat Karma (Post-Treatment Care)

The patient is advised to rest for at least 15–30 minutes in a warm room. A light herbal application may be done on the face to retain the effect of the therapy. The patient is asked to avoid cold exposure, direct air, or cold drinks immediately after the therapy. A mild diet of warm herbal teas, soups, or light porridge is recommended to balance Vata and Kapha.
