Digestive System
The digestive or gastrointestinal system starts at our mouth and ends at the anus. According to the ayurvedic school of thought, jathar agni (gastric fire) controls digestion; an imbalance in this agni can lead to various diseases.
There are three stages of digestion according to Ayurveda:
Stage 1: Limited to the mouth and upper stomach where saliva mixes with food. Kapha is predominant in this stage.
Stage 2: Occurs in the lower stomach and small intestine. Pitha elements play a crucial role here, and imbalance may lead to heartburn and acid reflux.
Stage 3: Takes place in the colon. Vata elements dominate this stage, and their imbalance can cause gas and bloating.
Different kinds of vasty—using medicated decoctions, milk, or oils—are among the most common treatments prescribed for gastrointestinal disorders.
